On Thursday 27th February Developing the Young Workforce organised a Rural Career Event called Plant the Seed! The aim of this event was to give secondary pupils from Dundee and Angus the opportunity to participate in interactive workshops, meet employers and individuals who work within the sector and learn about the different career options.

On Wednesday the 15th of January, DYW Dundee & Angus ran a “Finding your Future” event for pupils to hear more about careers in non-traditional gender career roles. The University of Abertay and Dundee and Angus College in partnership with Food & Drink Federation (FDF) Scotland and Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) delivered a successful Career Long Professional Learning (CLPL) event to inspire educators and career influencers about the wealth of career opportunities within the Hospitality, Tourism and Food & Drink Manufacturing industries.

Ryze might be the new kid on the block in Dundee, opening in September 2018, but they are already a firm favourite with everyone. A large part of their success is due to their staff, the Flight Crew in particular. These are the young people who greet you at the door and help you get booked in, making your experience as stress-free as possible. They are also the young people keeping the guests safe and engaging the children and young visitors at their level, interacting with the guests and encouraging them to keep safe and have a great time.

Developing the Young Workforce Dundee & Angus delivered a successful career insight project that saw 24 S2 male pupils from Morgan Academy in Dundee attend a Men into Care event at the school where they gained a greater understanding of careers and pathways within the Health and Care sectors.

March is a busy month, with lots of opportunities. Scottish Tourism Month takes place in March, an opportunity to celebrate the incredible, thriving and diverse industry that forms a major part of Scotland’s workforce and a key aspect of our national economy. Large and small events occur all over the country to share best practice, promote new opportunities and encourage us to be bigger and better. The first week of March is also Apprenticeship Week, dedicated time to nationally and locally recognise the extraordinary opportunities that apprenticeships offer to young people, employees, businesses and Scotland as a whole. As well as the invaluable contribution that the apprentices themselves make.

What started as an idea at a lively Careers in Care meeting got the ball rolling on a highly successful event for the young people of Dundee and Angus. It was identified that young people were not aware of the variety of career pathways available in the care sector. From that, they recognised a need for a careers in health care showcase type event.
